Hi Ian.

Great post on IDNs. The encoding factor was one element I was watching in regards to brand ownership in the IDNs. Unfortunately, the encoding was an issue then and as you say, it still seems to present issues now. If this improves in the near future, it will be interesting to see what impacts, if any, there will be.

I wrote a research piece about how search engines are handling IDNs recently - http://goo.gl/7DlmT - short summary is, unfortunately, that they're still having a number of problems with them.

Hi Marcus.

You're absolutely right. I was looking into IDNs when they first came out and the only thing that seemed to happen was it would render in the cryllic languages if you used the unicode. The initial tests we did at the time didn't suggest that it would place any further importance on the search relevancy on Google or Yandex to boost SEO. If you do notice anything, please do share...I'd love to hear about your findings further down the line. Perhaps unicode and search relevancy in SEO would also be another angle to take a look at too? Any thoughts?

Hi;
It's almost next to impossible to find info on the web about the impact of IDN's on SEO. As an example, at the moment I'm looking into using Russian domain names to see if yandex or google will react positively to them.

There seems to be no hint that IDN's have an advantage over regular latin character domain names for local search engines like yandex. So hard to get any info on this. Several months down the road I will have my own info.

Regards,

Good post. Canonicalisation is a problem that many people have and often do not even realize. One of the most common causes is when your site can be accessed using www.yourdomainname.com and yourdomainname.com, or even www.yourdomainname.com/Home.html and yourdomainname.com/Home.html. All the same page with the same content, but the search engines see it as 4 different unique urls, thus causing the duplicate content.
